He was Howard Hughes' personal photographer from 1942 to 1949, and the
first cameraman to record Angel Falls, the world's highest
waterfall, in the remote jungles of Venezuela, when he worked for National
Geographic. But of the thousands of photographs Knee took from 1930 to 1950
his heart, and eye, gravitated most to the majesty of New Mexico's skies,
churches, villages and endless landscapes.
He became friends with many artists of the time, including Edward Weston, Gustave Baumann, John Sloan,Will Shuster, Ansel Adams and many more. Through Mable Dodge Luhan, Knee was introduced to Georgia O'Keeffe when she arrived in N.M.,and he took photographs of a number of her paintings, as he did for other known artists. In 1950 Ernests intrests changed and he put some 6000 8x10 inch, nitrite gel negatives (before the advent of plastic) on ice. Finely in 1978 he decided to start printing his colection but after printing only a small part his health changed. The colection went on ice again for the next thirteen years, and in 1996 his son begain the timestaking process of cataloging, and making prints. His son, Dana Knee, also a photographer, is producing a limited number of silver gel prints, editions 1/50. The pictures in this gallery will change periodically, so visit often if you like what you see. |
